As mere humans living in an imperfect and sometimes hostile world, we all
receive wounds of various kinds. Our wounds may be emotional, psychological,
or even physical. Because the pain of our wounds is often severe, we seek
ways to soften it so that it doesn’t hurt quite so badly. Our understandable
attempts to escape the pain of our wounds, however, may create new,
unintended problems. Many fall prey to addiction because of ongoing attempts
to soften the pain of abuse, divorce, loss or betrayal. Eventually, the
addiction itself brings even more pain, sorrow, and suffering to our lives.
Many suffer wounds from the behavior of others, for example, those who have
been abused or who have experienced a heart-breaking divorce. Sometimes our
pain comes from great loss such as the loss of a loved one. Others suffer
because of bitter disappointment, whether in relationships, career, or other
endeavors. Some suffer from the realization that their dreams lay shattered
at their feet.
In our human frailty, we have all been wounded; therefore, in one way or
another, we are all in need of recovery from our hurt and pain. Such is the
nature of human life in a difficult world. Our need for recovery, however,
is nothing for which we should be ashamed; rather, it is something that,
with the help of a loving God, we must face and engage so that we may be
healed.
